Great article. Petersen was, and remains, a huge asset for the program. The question is can DeBoer turn this season into a recruiting triumph? I think he can, but it’s still an open question, but what receiver wouldn’t want to play in this offense?

This is my one concern about DeBoer and staff (well, maybe defense, too, but hard to compare anything to the caliber of the offense). Not sure if our NIL package isn’t robust enough for high schoolers, but recruiting, especially in-state, has been below average thus far. As the article notes, this team is largely comprised of some of Pete’s best recruiting classes.

Chris, what an awesome post, thank you. This is just great, between the ply on’s stuff that you can only get here and for that I’m grateful you are on the UW beat. I especially enjoyed the narrative on Westover, what a walk-on stud!

A super story, Mr. Caple! I will say that I do not believe there are many head coaches out there who could have done what Kalen DeBoer did in 2022 following on the disaster that was 2021. DeBoer and his staff were perfect for the Husky program after that season of abject failure. To go 11-2 last fall was no less than incredible in my mind. More is possible this season, but the schedule is quite a bit tougher. Penix is the key on offense, and it is already clear to me that he is playing at a higher level than he was last season. The team has a great deal of experience as well as talent, and they are very motivated this fall. If the defense and the special teams can both be good, then the ceiling in 2023 is very, very high.

Good points. Husky detractors like to say that DeBoer is winning with Pete’s and Lake’s kids and can’t recruit. Did those people watch what Lake and Donovan did with a so called offense (same WRs) as well as the stubbornness and lack of adjustments on D? Coaching and player confidence matters. To be honest the in-state recruiting has to be prioritized. Too many heading out of state and most troubling to other PAC schools. Go Dawgs

I'll repeat this story about Jack Westover. My son played youth baseball with Jack's older brother, and we used to see little Jack wandering around at the games. He was a muscular little guy. As my son commented, "That's the only toddler I've ever seen with a six-pack."

Culture matters in all walks of life. It’s good to read just how special the culture is in the UW football program. That bodes will for the future. Nice read, Christian. Thank you.

Christian, I’d also like to commend you for this article and your coverage of Husky football in general. I’ve been an avid Husky since 1957, a season ticket holder for almost 50 years, and an eager consumer of news coverage of the Dawgs. Christian, you are providing the most in-depth, quality coverage I have experienced in all those years. Thank you.

Fantastic read. Thanks Christian. Man, every time I read an interview with Petagna, I kind of wish he'd come back to UW. I mean, Courtney Morgan has been outstanding, so I wouldn't swap them out or anything. But I wonder what they could achieve together. Petagna seems to have a real soft spot for UW and a great eye on developing recruiting systems. I have been very pleased with UW has approached recruiting under CP and KDB. Seems like it's really trending upward. Not just in results but in in the system and people being built.

Awesome article! Probably the best I've read. I always knew Petersen was the other max factor that helped DeBoer with his recruits and in everything else based on the foundation he'd built at UW. I know Petersen was front and center in Jen's search for a new coach and he's still at UW right? The biggest surprise for me is the McKeefry (sp?) effect. Socha was excellent but McKeefry has done much better.
