Just make sure the question “What does Jedd’s OC actually do?” Migrates over, too! We’ll follow you to whatever platform!💜💛👏GO HUSKIES!

Christian -

There was a point in time when I was a college kid deleting the cookies on my phone on a daily basis so I could get through the Tacoma News Tribune paywall to see what you had to say about the team. Having since subscribed to The Athletic the day you were hired and canceled my subscription the day you were laid off, I can assure you that I could not care less what platform you use. It’s great that it will be convenient to transition to Ghost but if it wasn’t… it wouldn’t really matter. I’m thrilled you’ve been able to carve out your place in the world doing this and will support your writing wherever you feel is best for you to publish it.

I guess I’m one of the 5% who reads in Substack. Oh well, see you on 👻!!

Genuinely surprised to learn that number!

Can you post one last time on the Substack to let us 5%ers know once the new site is live?

Christian Caple's avatar

Definitely.

As long as I'm not getting double billed it will work out. Its a bummer though because I never paid attention to the emails. I always got notified on substack app (though if you didnt finish the article..as in left and came back it sometimes disappeared and would have to search substack for it). Didnt realized the chat was a third party. Thought it was part of substack.

Being email I am assuming there for be a AI to read the story. That sucks as I would listen on the way home from work sometimes and even though the AI didnt get it right all the time it was entertaining how it pronounced Mcglaughlin and wound...among other words.

That being said I missed the email. As usual just deleted it. and will need to get added to discord.

The chat is part of Substack, but you have to download the app to use it on your mobile device, which is no different than Discord.

There still will be a website, just like I had on Substack. It just won’t be connected to an app.

Hi Christian,

I too--like Jerry--am a big fan of the built-in "read aloud" button on substack and listen to many (most?) of your stories as audio while I drive around or while I am typing away at my desk. That would be a bummer to lose, but there is an official Ghost integration you can use to keep that AI-enabled read aloud functionality called BeyondWords:

"Ghost does not have a natively built-in, AI-powered 'read aloud' option for posts in the same seamless way that Substack does. While Substack automatically generates audio versions for posts, Ghost relies on integrations to add this functionality. A great way to add read-aloud functionality to a Ghost site is with 'BeyondWords' Integration; This is the official and most seamless method to make Ghost posts listenable with AI voices. It converts posts into audio and adds a customizable player at the top of your posts."

Not sure if that's worth it to you to implement if it's just a minority of people using that functionality, but maybe worth putting up a poll to find out how many people use or would use that feature?

Thanks Ramsey. Good recommendation. I’m looking into this.

Christian, is there any chance you’re going to send a simplified more stepwise list of what I need to do to keep reading your stuff (and by when)?

Sorry I’m a neanderthal and that was a lot of info, I got lost in the weeds…

Christian Caple's avatar

The basic version is: if you read in your email inbox, you shouldn’t have to do anything.

If you’d rather read on the website, you’ll just click login and follow the instructions (a profile will be created for you as part of the migration).

I’ll make clear when the switch is happening/has happened, and will include these steps again then. If you run into any issues then, or ever have any questions about any of it, please reach out.

Hey man, like, I supported you from the beginning and now you're gonna, like, Ghost me? /s

Sounds good. Probably time I checked out Discord, see what the kids have been talking about all this time...

You may have seen this already, but discord is rolling out an aggressive age verification program starting in March. By default users will now be in “teen mode” which likely doesn’t matter for your server, but nobody should feel pressured to send facial scans to frequently hacked discord and their less than reputable partners.

Christian Caple's avatar

I did see that, and do not like it — but our server obviously won't be NSFW, so I'm thinking it shouldn't be necessary.

Stew W's avatar

Agreed, I just would hate for new discord users to think they have to do it. I’m not sure how discord will be presenting this change, but I’m expecting them to make it not clear that it’s optional.

Brian G's avatar

Yeah I was also gonna say this. I’ve used discord in the past and it was great but this age verification is bad. Hope they either back off or something else better comes along
