12 things to know about Day 1 of Washington training camp

SEATTLE — Wildfire smoke and August heat combined to create a hazy environment at Washington’s first training camp practice Thursday morning.

It was a fairly light session, as is customary on Day 1, with players not yet wearing pads and coaches emphasizing fundamentals. Drills and special-teams work took up much of the two-hour session on the east practice field. There were no 11-on-11 periods, and no offense vs. defense competition.

That will come Sunday, coach Jedd Fisch said, after two days of acclimation and an off day.

“I don’t evaluate them at all in these two practices,” Fisch said. “These two practices are to prepare themselves to get evaluated. I look at this as truly like study hall. As you’re out there watching, you can see it’s all position-coach focused. … How do we really take a classroom onto the field? So it’s all preparation. It’s just another phase of that, (and) not one I’m going to evaluate much on.”

Still, it was our first chance to see the 2026 Huskies together on the practice field, and so we have some observations to pass along. And check out the video posted above for a look at some drills and post-practice interviews.
