As season nears, Washington's Kai McClendon is back in action

SEATTLE — During a team meeting on Tuesday, Elinneus Davis saw a certain d-line teammate sit up just a little straighter when coordinator Ryan Walters began discussing the plan for the day’s team periods.

Finally, during an early evening practice at the Dempsey Indoor, Mississippi State transfer Kai McClendon would be able to participate.

“You could feel the energy coming from him,” said Davis, the fourth-year player anchoring UW’s defensive line, who himself missed a season while recovering from injury. “Just seeing him in the pre-practice, he was getting ready, for-real for real. It’s really good to see him out there. I kind of have an idea of that journey, where you’re so eager to play and you’re so eager to come back and make them feel your wrath.”

For now, mere practice represents progress.
