SEATTLE — There certainly was no sense of doom, and in fact quite little gloom, when Washington Huskies coach Jedd Fisch met with reporters Monday afternoon.
That isn’t so surprising. Fisch trends optimistic on matters of performance and development, and so he of course found positives to accentuate after UW’s 16-14 victory over Utah State, a win so tenuous it caused his team to drop out of the AP top-25 poll from its No. 19 ranking.
He liked the Huskies’ defensive effort, and the fact the team is plus-six in turnover margin through two games. He highlighted a few strong special-teams plays. He shouted out freshmen receivers Jordan Clay and Trez Davis. He even thought quarterback Demond Williams Jr. “played very well after the first quarter,” and that “there were some really good signs of the way the runners picked up in pass protection.”
But also: “The running game needs to improve for us to be the type of offense that we want to be, understanding that complementary football is the most important thing we can do.”
