Kalen DeBoer's replacement: Who could Washington target?
An early list of potential candidates.
If Washington has anything working in its favor as it attempts to replace Kalen DeBoer, it’s that it should have its pick of viable candidates, since no other high-profile jobs are currently open. Of course, the timing cuts both ways, as some coaches who might have become candidates have already taken other jobs.
Washington will receive a $12 million buyout in exchange for Alabama hiring DeBoer, and was set to pay DeBoer at a top-10 level if he had stayed. UW’s athletics budget isn’t in great shape, but the resources should be there to lure the right candidate as the school transitions to the Big Ten — and athletic director Troy Dannen likely has already been putting out feelers, considering the likelihood of DeBoer-to-Bama since Wednesday.
Who might the Huskies target? As UW did when it hired DeBoer, my list focuses primarily on head coaches, with a few exceptions. I’d also probably lean toward candidates who either come from an offensive background, or have otherwise coached teams that can score. This isn’t meant to be exhaustive, nor to suggest Washington will speak with every one of these coaches. But this is my sense of the caliber of coach UW could hire.
