SEATTLE — Iowa’s quarterback passed for 108 yards, and the Washington Huskies finished the game with more total offensive yardage.
Final score: Iowa 40, Washington 16.
The Huskies’ inaugural matchup against the Hawkeyes as Big Ten members in 2024 was a fitting initiation to the league’s rugged style, and to the way Iowa has won so many games under coach Kirk Ferentz in his now 28 seasons in charge.
Iowa ran the ball and used kickoff and punt returns to secure short fields. The Hawkeyes forced two turnovers and sacked UW quarterback Will Rogers four times. Their average starting field position was the minus-45.
Washington didn’t have the roster necessary to play Iowa’s game, particularly along both lines of scrimmage. Even after a cathartic victory over defending national champion Michigan the week prior, UW’s defeat beneath the October sun in Iowa City served as a humbling reminder of what the Huskies still weren’t.
So, what are they now, with Iowa visiting for a 6 p.m. Friday game at Husky Stadium?
