SEATTLE — Attention, Apple Cup historians: we might have witnessed rivalry history on Sunday afternoon at Husky Stadium.
Not the labor-day weekend kickoff, bizarre as it might have been for this annual tradition. Nor the Sunday kickoff, which did afford an exclusive television window, and reasonable folks may draw reasonable conclusions about whether that wound up a good thing.
More so, I’m wondering if a head coach has ever thrown his headset in frustration in the century-plus this game has been played.
More specifically, I wonder whether it’s ever happened in the first half.
Most specifically, I’m wondering whether that coach’s team knelt out a two-touchdown victory and accepted the trophy from the governor afterward.
No. 17 Washington began its third season under coach Jedd Fisch with a 24-10 win over Washington State before a crowd of 71,056 on a sun-blessed day by the water. The Huskies’ defense did nothing to make you think they won’t be pretty tough this year, forcing three turnovers and holding the Cougars without a third-down conversion on 11 tries, “which is pretty amazing,” Fisch said.
The punting was pretty good, too.
The offense?
See the headset.
